Uranium

Why Nunavut needs a public inquiry into uranium mining
June 29, 2010 A petition initiated by Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit has been tabled in the Legislative Assembly calling for a public inquiry on whether or not to open Nunavut to uranium mining.

Makita Response to GN Decision Not to Hold Uranium Mining Inquiry
August 31, 2010. The Board of Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit (Makita) today released the following statement in response to the Government of Nunavut (GN)’s decision not to hold a public inquiry on the question of whether uranium mining should take place in Nunavut.

Response to Petition to hold a Public Inquiry into the Wisdom of Allowing Uranium Mining in Nunavut
August 11, 2010 The Government of Nunavut acknowledges that Nunavummiut may have questions, opinions or concerns about uranium mining projects proposed in our territory. We take the issue very seriously and we want to ensure that mining is undertaken in Nunavut with the least possible risk to human health and the environment.

A Saskatchewan Dene Perspective on Uranium
Readers of the position statement written by the Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit group that was published in the June 28 edition of Nunatsiaq Online were given a highly, misleading picture of the relationship the uranium mining industry in northern Saskatchewan has with local stakeholders. Year after year, polling shows support for our industry among people in Saskatchewan, including northern stakeholders, tops 80 per cent.

Uranium Mining: The Facts on a Well-Regulated Industry
Canada is among the top producers of uranium in the world, and there is increasing demand for production. As a result, the exploration and mining industry is conducting extensive exploration activities to identify new commercial sources in Canada and all over the world.

Nunavut Planning Commision Draft Land Use Plan Letter, June 2010
A draft of the Nunavut Land Use Plan was released for comment on June 17. The basic principle of the land use planning process is that the land use plan will support land and resource management initiatives and fill regulatory gaps. It is not the intent of the plan to replace existing legislative and regulatory roles of our planning partners. It is important to note that the attached plan and strategy are working drafts. The NPC continues to work with planning partners and will add new data as it is received, and seek feedback on the direction being considered for the management of lands and resources in the Nunavut Settlement Area. If your organization has datasets, further information or suggestions regarding the draft plan and implementation strategy, the NPC will require the feedback no later than August 27, 2010 in order to meet the timelines of the Commission. The draft plan and implementation document will then be updated and presented to the Commissioners at their September Commission meeting.
